Livingston County Academy (LCA)
Livingston County Academy in Pontiac provides services to students requiring specialized education. This LCSSU school program is designed for students in grades K-6 who are moderately to severely emotionally distube or behavior disordered. These students are also currently receiving special education services.
LCA staff continually develop creative classroom projects to motivate student interest, explore their emotions and enhance their cooperation to improve academic skills. The goals of Livingston County Academy are to facilitate the integration of each student back into the public school system and to have the student and parents work on a mutually productive relationship.
Among the Academy's innovative programs are:
- Aggression Replacement Training
- Role Playing of Positive Life Skills
- Participation and Involvement in Community Experiences
- Parental Involvement, which includes Parent Meetings, Daily Parent Communication, and Home Visits by the Teachers.

- Adaptive Physical Education
- Counseling Services
Crossroads
In 1998, Livingston County Special Services Unit established Crossroads, a school program to serve students ages 13-21 who are emotionally disturbed and/or behavior disordered and are entitled to special education services. Student's specific problems commonly include serious school problems, behavior disorders, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, attention deficit disorders, other health impairments, psychotic types of behavior, thought disorders, and multiple handicaps.

Educational development is the prime work of children and problems in this area can have a critical effect on any future development. The Crossroads program is aimed at the special educational needs of the students in treatment. It is recognized that multiple factors can influence a child's educational development. Crossroads School provides services designed to meet the unique needs of each student.

The goal of the Crossroads School program is to facilitate the integration of the student back into the home school district and to have the student and the parent/guardian work on a mutually productive relationship. Crossroads School staff review progress on a weekly basis and prepare written reports quarterly in relation to the identified outcomes of specific goals developed for each student. The program provides a rich curriculum including Adaptive Physical Education, Music Therapy, Social Services, Vocational Training, Social Skills Training, and Counseling Services.
Referral Process for the Academy and/or Crossroads School
- District personnel should first request a staffing in cooperation with the LCSSU assigned supervisor.
- The LCSSU Supervisor will contact the LCA/Crossroads Staff and LCSSU team members to arrange an IEP meeting. The LCA/Crossroads staff MUST be present.
- Prior to placement, the student SHOULD have a current Behavior Intervention Plan which has been implemented to specifically deal with problem behaviors.
- Any pertinent medical, social-developmental, psychological, disciplinary, or academic record information needs to be shared with the IEP team members to assist with the placement decision.
